How they differ
A central system relies on ductwork, so its performance depends as much on the ducts as on the equipment. A mini-split delivers cooling directly into the room, and each indoor unit can usually be set to its own temperature.
Most mini-splits are heat pumps, so they heat as well as cool.
Central air tends to fit when
- The house already has ductwork in good condition
- The goal is even cooling throughout, from one thermostat
- Wall-mounted indoor units are not wanted in living spaces
A mini-split tends to fit when
- The house has no ducts, or adding them would be difficult
- One room or addition needs cooling the main system cannot reach
- Different rooms need different temperatures
- A garage, sunroom or finished attic needs its own comfort
What to ask before deciding
The condition of any existing ducts, how many rooms or zones need their own unit, and where indoor and outdoor units and line sets would go. For many houses the answer is a central system with a mini-split added for one problem space.
